Medical Nutrition Therapy
Ninety percent of children with autism are at nutritional risk resulting in higher rates of lifestyle related chronic disease in adulthood. Prevention starts in childhood but sensory processing challenges, gastrointestinal disorders and social interaction impairments can be barriers to achieving nutritional health. This session summarizes information necessary for the dietitian to consider to provide successful nutrition intervention.
Participants will be able to effectively assess for gastrointestinal dysfunction in individuals with autism.
At the completion of the session, using evidenced based materials, participants will be able to adapt medical nutrition therapy to address gastrointestinal dysfunction in children with autism.
Participants will be able to adjust nutrition assessment and treatment reflecting current research regarding sensory and motor challenges in individuals with autism.
