Overview of diabetes treatments, alternative therapies in diverse populations, including mind/body therapies and meal plan choices; current treatments - validity and safety in diabetes care; recommendations for culturally diverse societies and relevant diabetes resources. Exploring concepts that affect Muslim patients' choices in diabetes care such as fatalism, barriers to physical activity; motivators such as family centered care; religious obligations to health and wellness and use of alternative medicine as a facilitator. The healthcare professional working with diabetes will understand independent choices people with diabetes make in diverse populations and how the dietitian can effectively and safely collaborate with the patient.Planned with the Muslims in Nutrition and Dietetics MIG

Identify the types of alternative treatments used and helpful in diabetes care within diverse populations

Discuss the current diabetes recommendations for culturally diverse societies and review culturally relevant diabetes resources

Gain cultural competence, awareness and identify barriers, motivators and facilitators for Muslim patients in regards to their diabetes care
