Dietary recommendations for youth athletes should emphasize optimal eating patterns to support health, normal growth and sport participation demands, through a balanced and appropriate intake of macronutrients, vitamins and minerals at the appropriate time developmentally. Moreover, it is essential to emphasize sufficient hydration and minimize any measurable sweat induced body water deficits that can negatively affect performance and, in some athletic scenarios, can be a danger to a young athlete's health and safety, especially during vigorous physical activity in a warm-to-hot environment. Informed dietitians can play a key role as a trusted resource in providing the most effective and practical sports nutrition guidelines and recommendations for youth athletes. Planned with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Committee for Professional Development, in collaboration with the Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutrition DPG.

Describe the essential knowledge and extra requirements regarding nutrition and hydration for youth athletes to optimize health, normal growth and sports performance.

Recognize the practical and physiological challenges in maintaining optimal nutrition and hydration during youth sports training and competition.

List the clinical risks associated with inadequate nutrition and hydration and best practices in minimizing or averting these risks.
