Whole, fresh foods are an essential ingredient for health and optimal functioning. Learn more about the “food first” approach used in Functional Medicine and how it is used to create health. This is a patient centered approach, rather than a disease-centered approach to treatment. Functional medicine focuses on getting to the root cause of disease by uncovering nutrition insufficiencies, food sensitivities, and the health of the gut microbiome. Expect to walk away from the session with a new outlook on how to use nutrition to heal a whole organism, versus an individual organ system. In addition to a new outlook, this session will allow you to expand your current toolkit using nutritional supplementation, therapeutic diets and detoxification plans. Planned with The Academy Committee for Professional Development

Describe the three main focal points of functional medicine, including: taking a patient centered approach, getting to the root cause of disease, and viewing the body as a whole organism.

Recognize the role of the gut flora and nutrition-related biomarkers that indicate levels of digestive and absorptive and inflammation.

Identify the four functional nutrition fundamentals, which view food as medicine, connection, information and energy.
