Rapid economic development, cross border trade and advance agriculture technologies have revolutionized Asian food culture and lifestyle. The continent has been dubbed a nutrition time bomb where the disease burden is shifting rapidly from communicable and infectious diseases to non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs). The public health threat in Asia is an opportunity to recognize the role of the dietitian in facilitating dietary behavior and lifestyle changes. Yet the number of dietitians in majority of Asian countries are less than 1/100 000 population. Dietitians in Asia face challenges such as inadequate legislation, variations in education standards and lack of professional autonomy. Despite these, you will obtain key insights into the role of AFDA and inspiring case examples from several countries on the way forward for Asian dietetics.
