This session will review challenges in nutrition assessment and support of the critically ill obese patient. This will include recently published evidence based guidelines on nutrition support in the obese and a case study will show how to apply the guidelines to patient care. This session will also share how diagnostic abdominal CT scans can be used to identify sarcopenic obesity.
Identify challenges and management strategies in providing nutrition support to critically ill obese patients
Define sarcopenic obesity utilizing diagnostic abdominal CT scans
Discuss implications of calorie and protein prescriptions among sarcopenic obese patients receiving nutrition support

The Critical Illness Guideline revision, completed in early 2012, incorporates many new and revised recommendations important to disseminate to the critical care and general practitioner. This session will focus on the application of recommendations with several case studies to highlight various aspects of the Guideline as well as how to implement specific recommendations on a more global basis, i.e., through the use of protocols.Objectives:
- Describe recent revisions to the Academy Evidence Analysis Library Critical Illness recommendations.
- Describe and overcome barriers to implementing critical illness practice recommendations.
- Develop nutrition support intervention strategies for critically ill patients to optimize nutrition and clinical outcomes.
