Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses that affect more than 5 million Americans, 90% of which are children and adolescents. Family Based Treatment empowers parents to actively participate in treatment, increasing the likelihood of full remission. Newly updated diagnostic criteria in the DSM-V may expedite identification and treatment of young patients more effectively. Strategies for determining goal weights and calorie requirements are reviewed.
