In 2015, over 3 million high school females are participating in sports. Sports dietitians are essential in the care of these young athletes. The female athlete triad consists of low bone mineral density, menstrual abnormalities and disordered eating. The female athlete triad, l affects ~ 1-1.2% of young women participating in sports. Among older adolescents and young women the prevalence may be as high as 16%. Designing evidence based nutrition interventions is predicated on understanding the physiological alterations associated with chronic underfueling. In this session, one of the nation's premier experts on the female athlete triad will detail the reproductive, endocrine and bone changes associated with this condition.
