In 2015, over 3 million high school females are participating in sports. Sports dietitians are essential in the care of these young athletes. The female athlete triad consists of low bone
mineral density, menstrual abnormalities and disordered eating. The female athlete triad, l affects ~ 1-1.2% of young women participating in sports. Among older adolescents and young women the
prevalence may be as high as 16%. Designing evidence based nutrition interventions is predicated on understanding the physiological alterations associated with chronic underfueling. In this
session, one of the nation's premier experts on the female athlete triad will detail the reproductive, endocrine and bone changes associated with this condition. Planned with the Academy of
Nutrition and Dietetics Committee for Professional Development, in collaboration with the Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutrition DPG
List the evidence base underlying protein recommendations for athletes
Analyze role of protein intake in regulating muscle size and strength in sports nutrition
